Bono: 'I slept uneasily last night'

U2 frontman reacts to violence against monks in Myanmar

U2 frontman Bono has spoken about the recent violence in Myanmar, in which nine people have been killed.

The country’s Buddhist monks are leading protests against the military government’s decision to double the price of fuel last month.

Despite the peaceful protests by the monks, many have been arrested, with hundreds of them being dragged from their beds overnight (September 26) during invasions of their monasteries.

National League For Democracy Party leader Aung San Suu Kyi, for whom Bono wrote the song ‘Walk On’ is reportedly under house arrest.

The protests were peaceful until yesterday when security forces opened fire on protesters.

Speaking at the premiere of ‘Across The Universe’ Bono showed his support for the monks, telling the Associated Press "Their non-violence may, I pray, win out over the ugliness of the situation.

"There is jeopardy. I slept uneasily last night, and I'm sure everyone else that watched did, too," he continued, before asking, "How far are they going to have to go?"
