London singer/songwriter wins the gong in her hometown

Kate Nash won the Best British Female award at the Brit Awards 2008 tonight (February 20) in London.

Nash beat off competition from the likes of KT Tunstall and Leona Lewis

“This is really surreal,” she said as she accepted the award from actor James Nesbitt, before thanking her family for their support, as well as her management and other people who had helped her career.

Nash gave a shout out to the Brits School, which she graduated from, along with the likes of Amy Winehouse and members of The Kooks, before praising her fellow nominees for their individuality which proves that "female is not a genre".

Bat For Lashes, PJ Harvey, Leona Lewis and KT Tunstall were also nominated for the award.

Kate Nash is now set to hit the road on the US NME Awards Tour which kicks off in April.

She must have been sewn into that dress, it looks like it might burst open at any moment. I never knew Kate Nash had such huge shoulders.

I agree with Kate about her title..it is surreal :-)

and, sorry Danii H. but what does being a role model have to do with being a good artist? Then we should give the best female award to Mother Theresa..she deserves it more :-)
the history of art is full of examples of absolute geniuses who lived a bohemian, corrupted life. but they changed our way to listen to music.
anyway, whether she were a role model or an absolute nutter, Kate Nash is the most mediocre songwriter come out in the last years, second only after Lily Allen.
and I agree..I wish Annie Lennox was nominated and won.
