Britney Spears' parents speak out over 'Dr Phil' drama

They say the TV psychologist breached trust

Britney Spears’ family have commented on Dr Phil McGraw’s decision to speak to the media after visiting the singer in hospital.

Lou Taylor, business manager for Lynne and Jamie Spears, said that McGraw’s media interviews this week were “just inappropriate”.

She explained that "the family basically extended an invitation of trust for him to come in as a resource to support them, not to go out and make public statements”.

Taylor also indicated that the family had requested that the psychologist, who became famous on the Oprah show, refrain from talking about the case to the media.

According to interviews earlier this week, McGraw says he was invited to speak to the star by her family, and showed up to Cedars-Sinai hospital as Spears was being discharged.

He defended his part in the case, saying: "Somebody needs to step up and get this young woman into some quality care - and I do not apologise one whit, not one second, for trying to make that happen," reports the Associated Press.

He told Entertainment Tonight that he was contacted through his wife, who is friends with Lynne Spears.

McGraw earlier this week shelved plans for a 'Britney' TV special, deeming the situation too intense.

As previously reported here on NME.COM, his TV show on October 4 focused on Britney's mental health, during which he suggested that the singer may need to be “involuntarily committed”.

Spears’ was taken to hospital just after midnight on January 3 after a custodial dispute involving her two sons Sean Preston and Jayden James.

After Dr. Phil saw her and then later made a statement that she needed to be admitted to the hospital because her situation was too intense, I was uncomfortable to hear that. I felt it should be the job of her public relations or publicity agent to inform the public about what was happening to her. I am not impressed by what her so called "handlers" have been doing, letting her run around and creating so many dramas and antics that provided food for the media to feast on. For 3 yrs, I had been asking "Where are this young woman's people???" When Dr Phil came to see her, if her people knew what they were doing, they would have had a meeting and a binding and signed agreement with him to agree on what he should do and say publicly or not.

The fame-hungry Spears family dares to be upset with Dr. Phil for going public???? Their trainwrecked daughters are the result of their lifetime lust for fame. Dr. Phil may handle things like a "bull in a china shop" at times, but I admire him for trying to initiate some sort of intervention. Everyone else seems to be watching the freak show and exploiting Brittany. I wouldn't imagine that the Spears family would have even considered an intervention that wasn't televised. They're too hungry for the attention. Brittany's parents need to point fingers at themselves. Brittany is an adult and making her own bad choices, but her parents are "reaping what they have sown."

I must say that this woman seems very self absorbed and "fame-hungry", but she never seemed mentally ill until a year ago. Has anyone thought that she may be suffering from some extreme form of postpartum depression. She had two babies in two years. It's a very real illness and can be worse in some than others. I feel sorry for her.
