Rock 'n' roll legend Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance at a tribute event held in his honour in New York last night (April 5).

Taking to the stage at Carnegie Hall, he performed three songs for the delighted crowd, two of which he performed acoustically.

Punk legend Patti Smith also appeared, performing her Springsteen-penned hit ‘Because The Night’ as well as actor Kevin Bacon, who sang a version of the Oscar-winning song ‘Streets Of Philadelphia’ with his band The Bacon Brothers.

A string of acts performed Springsteen covers throughout the evening, including Badly Drawn Boy, The Hold Steady and Steve Earle, all of whom played to benefit of the Music For Youth programme - an initiative supporting music education for underprivileged children in New York.

While on stage, the New Jersey rocker made light of the nostalgic nature of the show, saying “The good news is… I’m not dead yet.”

The Boss also stopped to pay particular tribute to the wheelchair-bound blues/folk legend Odetta, who had earlier delivered what he described as “the best version of ’57 Channels’ I ever heard”.
