Bruce Springsteen performs new campaign song for Barack Obama – listen

The 'Wrecking Ball' star debuted the acoustic track 'Forward' yesterday (October 18) in Iowa and Ohio

Bruce Springsteen debuted a brand new campaign song for President Barack Obama yesterday (October 18) during rallies for the incumbent US President in Iowa and Ohio.

In Iowa he introduced the song by doing an impression of Obama and said the Democratic candidate had called him a week ago saying "I don’t have a campaign song", and suggested to Springsteen that they use his campaign slogan 'Forward' as the name of a new track. During the track, which was performed in call-and-response style with the crowd, a jovial Springsteen said: "When I got to the second verse I had a little trouble, because there's only so many words that actually rhyme with Obama!"

"Top that, Mr Romney!" he said at the end of the song to cheers from the crowd.

Earlier this week Bruce Springsteen wrote an open letter declaring his support for Obama in the forthcoming US elections.

The legendary rocker posted the letter on his website, addressing it to his 'friends'. He proceeded to state the reasons why he'd be supporting Democratic candidate Obama and wrote: "Right now, we need a President who has a vision that includes all of our citizens, not just some, whether they are our devastated poor, our pressured middle class, and yes, the wealthy too; whether they are male or female, black, white, brown, or yellow, straight or gay, civilian or military."

Springsteen had previously claimed that despite supporting Obama at a series of rallies in 2008 and Democratic candidate John Kerry in 2004, he would not be campaigning at this election.

He joins a host of artists showing their support for Obama in the forthcoming US election, which will take place on November 6. Beyoncé and Jay Z recently raised $4 million (£2.46 million) for the campaign at a New York fundraiser.
