Carl Barat, former co-frontman with The Libertines, is set to star as Roman emperor Nero in an opera in Paris this summer.

Barat will play Nero in a production of Pop'pea, an opera which has been inspired by Monteverdi's 17th century work The Coronation of Poppea. The production will take place in Paris at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

The version of the opera Barat is set to star in has been re-written with pop and rock music replacing the traditional classical score that features more generally in productions of The Coronation of Poppea.

Barat has also confirmed he will be filming a part in new flick The Man Inside this summer. He will act in the film alongside former EastEnders actress Michelle Ryan and actor Ashley Thomas. Barat's character is described as an "unsavoury type who has led Michelle Ryan's character astray and now refuses to let her go".

The singer has also announced he is to release an eight-track EP of rarities in digital format only. The release features four rare tracks and four live versions of tracks from his eponymous debut solo album.

The tracklisting for the EP is as follows:

'Death Fires Burn At Night'
'This Is The Song'
'Sing For Your Supper'
'Carve My Name' (Live)
'Grimaldi' (Live)
'She’s Something' (Live)
'So Long My Lover' (Live)
