Carl Barat awarded honorary doctorate by University of Winchester Carl Barat Tickets
The former member of The Libertines said the honour was an 'incredible privilege'
In an introspective acceptance speech, the Libertines man described receiving the award as an "incredible privilege", adding that he seized the opportunity "before they realised it was a mistake".
Winchester Cathedral, where the ceremony was held, saw unlikely topics being discussed inside Holy walls, ranging from Pete Doherty and drugs to working "in a brothel."
Barat went on to speak of artists being "stigmatised" in a world focused on industry. He joins other musical greats such as David Gilmour and Brian May in the doctorate hall of fame.
The event was something of a family affair - his mother works at the institution and his sister, Alice, graduated at the same time in a BA in Drama.
"Carl Barat is one of the most innovative and interesting figures in contemporary British music," Professor Elizabeth Stuart, Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor said in a statement. "The University is delighted to honour such a creative and reflective performer."
In August Barat made his live debut with new band Eyes On Film at the Proud Galleries venue in London. The guitarist has hooked up with the newcomers for the foreseeable future, and revealed that he's set to record with them soon.
