Carl Barât's new band The Jackals played their first show at The Bowery District venue in Reading last night (May 13), combining their own new material with tracks from throughout Barat's career.

The band, formed via auditions earlier this year began the set with 'Victory Gin', the first song the members – guitarist Billy Tessio Guitar, bassist Adam Claxton and drummer Jay Bone – had to learn in 20 minutes for the auditions. Another new track, 'Storm Is Coming' followed.

The first batch of songs from Barat’s back catalogue included Dirty Pretty Things' 'Deadwood' and the title track from The Libertines seminal 'Up The Bracket' album, and the set continued with new tracks interlaced with fan favourites. The varied original Jackals’ material veered from theatrical cabaret numbers with shouted choruses ('March Of The Idol') to epic ballroom ballads ('Let It Rain') and ska tinged punk furies ('Glory Days').

After a rendition of 'Bang Bang You're Dead' the band left the stage and Barat returned for a solo acoustic segment, taking audience requests for rare Libertines track 'France', Dirty Pretty Things' 'Come Closer' and 'The Ballad Of Grimaldi'. Barat then re-introduced the band with a cry of "I proudly present to you, The Jackals!" and the show finished with a another new song called ‘War Of The Roses’ and a run through The Libertines' 'I Get Along'.

"I thought it was fucking belting," Barat said post-show. "There was so much energy waiting to come out. We’ve come together at quite a steady pace, there’s definitely a massive connection [within the band] and when we went out there tonight it was definitely us as a band, come rain or shine we were going to do what we were going to do. My biggest intention was for it to be the boys’ band, not for it to be an identikit of previous bands."

The Jackals played:

'Victory Gin'
'Storm Is Coming'
'Deadwood'
'Up The Bracket'
'March Of The Idol'
'Let It Rain'
'Gin & Milk'
'Run With The Boys'
'Glory Days'
