Former Catatonia singer and BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Cerys Matthews has been awarded an MBE.

The musician was part of this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List. She told the BBC that she mistook the letter for a tax bill, commenting: "It was a surpirse - the letter got lost so my mum called me up when it did turn up and said 'Oh, you've got something here from Her Majesty's Government', and i thought it was a tax bill or something, so it was a nice surprise!"

Others honoured included actors Angelina Jolie, Maggie Smith and Daniel Day-Lewis, as well as the late cancer charity campaigner Stephen Sutton.

Cerys Matthews formed Catatonia in 1992. The band released their debut album 'Way Beyond Blue' in 1996, following it with the Number One albums 'International Velvet' in 1998 and 'Equally Cursed and Blessed' in 1999. They released their last album 'Paper Scissors Stone' in 2001, breaking up later that year. Matthews then released her solo debut 'Cockahoop' in 2003. She started presenting on BBC Radio 6 Music in 2008.
