The Wombats win over Club NME LA

You Am I pack the house with loyal fans

The Wombats won over a packed house last night (August 8) at Club NME Los Angeles with Fred Perry Subculture.

The Liverpool trio kicked off their lively set by singing a cappella barbershop-quartet style, and then launched into high-energy tracks from their self-titled EP.

"This song's called 'Moving To New York', but we're happy to be here in LA," said frontman Matthew Murphy. "We've noticed that the pigeons are the same size here as they are in Liverpool."

After their set, Murphy told NME.COM that the band have been enjoying their first trip to California. "The guys have been sunbathing by the pool and we've definitely been getting used to it," he said.

Later in the evening, Chicago quartet The Redwalls impressed the crowd with their unique brand of blues-rock.

Headliners You Am I garnered the biggest cheers of the evening, as several long-time fans had come down to see a rare Los Angeles performance by the Australian band that counts Sonic Youth and Soundgarden among their fans.

Club NME with Fred Perry Subculture takes place at Spaceland in the Silver Lake neighbourhood of Los Angeles every Wednesday night.

Next Wednesday (August 15), White Saveage and Static Static are set to headline Club NME LA with Fred Perry Subculture.
