Cold War Kids unveil new material at San Diego Street Scene

Cold War Kids tried out new material from their highly anticipated forthcoming album for a receptive crowd at the San Diego Street Scene this weekend (September 20).

The Southern California quartet looked right at home and drew a huge crowd to their late-afternoon set on one of the festival's two main stages.

In addition to playing several new tunes from 'Loyalty To Loyalty', which is due out in the US tomorrow (September 23), the band tore through crowd-pleasing favourites including 'Hang Me Up To Dry' and 'Hospital Beds', which inspired mass audience singalongs.

When introducing the introspective new tune 'Every Man I Fall For', frontman Nathan Willett said, "This is kind of a love song written from a woman's perspective, so it's a song for the ladies."

"I hope people are able to embrace the new songs," Willlett told NME.COM before their set. "I think it's a much harder to get record, you need to listen to it a lot more to be able to appreciate it than the first record. So I hope people are able to sit with it and to process it. We really want people to embrace the whole album."

Just before Cold War Kids performed, Spiritualized drew a sizeable crowd of early afternoon festival-goers to their set on the festival's other main stage.

Frontman Jason Pierce was backed by a full electric band and two female vocalists rather than the string quartet he toured with earlier this year, and played a set very similar to the one they performed at the Hollywood Bowl two nights before.

John Doe of veteran Los Angeles punk band X, who played a storming set with his band later in the day, watched attentively from the wings during Spiritualized's 40-minute set.
