Coldplay to play free gigs in London and New York

The band mark the release of their new album with a special treat for fans

Coldplay are to play two free shows to celebrate the release of their new album 'Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends'.

The band will play London's Brixton Academy on June 16, and New York's Madison Square Garden a week later (June 23). Fans are advised to keep checking the band's official website www.coldplay.com and not to contact the venue box offices, as no tickets will be made available for sale.

Meanwhile, the release of the record, the follow-up to 2005's 'X&Y', has been brought forward four days in the UK to bring it into line with global release dates. The release date is now June 12.

As previously revealed on NME.COM, Coldplay will release the first single from the album free with the NME. The 7-inch vinyl will include the single, 'Violet Hill', backed by another song, 'A Spell A Rebel Yell', which won't be available anywhere else.

To ensure you get your copy of the exclusive Coldplay vinyl you can pre-order your issue, out on May 10, from NME.COM at the NME online shop.

The single can also be downloaded from Coldplay's website from 12.15pm tomorrow (April 29).

its_rudimentary... it's a bit sad you clicked on this story just to leave that comment, but i guess it's 'cool' to diss coldplay eh!it'll be great to see coldplay in a small venue, 5 minutes from home & free!

it's funny at how much they are trying...i mean, the art work...exaggerated...and they should've stuck with the second part of the title...it would've fit the artwork better....these free shows...emi are really trying to redeem themselves for losing another band who have done the similar thing....some people will know what i'm talking about.....i mean, this could turn out to be really good music or crap music....so who knows...we'll see with tomorrows single release.

Ha! it's_rudimentary, that's hilarious! I can't say I'm the biggest fan of Coldplay to be honest. I thought Parachutes was completely genius when it first came out, but then the 2 albums that followed just sounded to me like they could've quite easily been one album. It seems like they just found a formula that clearly worked and decided to stick to it and never experiment, which is fair enough I suppose from a sales point of view, but that's not really what it's about is it?! I think I've basically developed a numbness towards Coldplay, they don't really register! I guess I'll wait and see what the next album brings. I'm guessing Parachutes: Part 4.
