Coldplay follow Oasis with Thursday album release (June 12)

Is 'Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends' the new 'Be Here Now'?

Coldplay's fourth studio album 'Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends' is out today (June 12).

This Thursday release of the Brian Eno-produced record, the follow-up to the band's 2005 multi-platinum selling album 'X & Y', echoes Oasis, who also went for a midweek release for their third album 'Be Here Now'.

Released in August 1997, the Oasis album, much like Coldplay's current record, was highly anticipated by both music fans and critics.

Similar to 'Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends', the Oasis record had a considerable pre-release build-up, which saw the band selling 420,000 copies on the first day.

Coldplay's new album has broken the iTunes pre-sale record - with pre-sales earlier this week outnumbering the rest of the Top 40 combined.

Have you bought the new Coldplay album? Or are you heading out to the shops today? If so NME.COM want your reviews.

The difference is Be Here Now is an amazing album. Coldplay could never make an album that good. i've heard the new one and its nothing special. Martin's lyrics are appauling.

it's only so they can get it in the shops for father's day. dad rock ahoy! anyone else noticed that douchebag looks like tony blair when he smiles?

Who cares when it's released it will be an amazing album.

Been listening to the album constantly since it became available on Myspace friday and it's amazing and then then went out about a proper copy this morning! I know there will be an endless stream of insulting comments written about them on here today, but they are where they are for a reason. Alongside Radiohead, they're the best British band for...years! Forget Arctics, Kaisers and all that other nonsense, if you've ever seen Coldplay live you'll know they are the real deal. Oasis I have to say have seen better days.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out that while Martin's lyrics are appauling, please go and study the amazing lyrical genius of She's Electric. Martin may not be a poet, but Oasis can hardly claim to be poets either.

Can't be. They've already released their Be Here Now with X&Y (ridiculous anticipation, overproduced, too long, not enough good songs...), so this one's more like their Standing On The Shoulder of Giants. Which isn't very promising either. But Violet Hill is alright.

Be Here Now was appalling and Oasis never really recovered from it. Looking forward to the Coldplay album, which should be worth hearing. People who condemn Coldplay as being bland (see yesterday's Independent) are not listening properly. If the subtleties of their music are lost on anyone, it says more about the person than the band.

it's only so they can say "oh look how good we are we only had it out a day before the chart count and it's still number one"

Be Here Now an amazing album you are having a laugh i can see why you dont like coldplay for, oasis fans just cant handle the fact that they are no longer the biggest and best group in this country , that title belongs to coldplay and you no it

It would've been out for fathers day if released last Monday!! Very good album nowhere near as commercial as the last 3 but still good. Interesting to see what the other singles are. I think they may have been listening to "kid a" before writing this album.

Well I'm just glad they changed the artwork, otherwise how would you know it was any different to the last album?

NO, of course. Even, I prefer X&Y before Viva la Vida.

Coldplay's album is sounding quite brilliant i must say. Comparing it to Be Here Now though is a bit over the top. When Be Here Now came out it was lorded as confirmation that Oasis were as good as anything that had come before, the buzz surounding it was unbelievable. Coldplay won't sell 1 million records in 10 days in Britain, torrents has made sure that won't happen. Coldplay have also lost some of their buzzability because of the slightly underwhelming 'X&Y'.

hey sachin - be here now blows - it was ahuge dissappointment to all rock fans - maybe you are listening to another album - a rush of blood to the head is 10x better than be here now

As a lifelong oasis fan i can´t help but laugh at sachin´s comment knocking coldplay for having sub-standard lyrics. Martin sounds like wordsworth compared to noel´s anything-that-rhymes-with-´something´-or-´say´ writing style.

lol....coldplay are grandad rock, they are a bunch of techy overgrown students xx

Be Here Now was, at best, an average album. So was X&Y (Coldplay's third album), however, after a couple of listens to Viva la Vida, it's already clear it's much better than both.

You fools :) Oasis and Coldplay are the two best bands on the planet, get your ears tested boys and girls and enjoy proper music, and to the lovely chap who dissed She's Electic, "She's got a sister and god only knows how i've missed her, and on the palm of her hand is a blister and I need more time" brilliant I love you Noel. Got Viva La Vida this morning love it, love the song "Yes" fantastic, can't wait till 1st December, opening night of the tour and I am there, buzzing :)

On the XFM X-posure playback they were asked about why they were doing this and they appeared to not know it was coming out on a Thursday. So it wasn't smug Chris on his pile of money be arrogant, apparently EMI arranged it to bring it in line with other international release dates...or something.

You all seem to be missing the point that both Coldplay and Oasis are awful! You guys must be pretty bland

oasissisao

Jun 13, 2008

Be Here Now is one of the best albums in music history. Magical sound of Oasis at their best. I like Coldplay, but 'Viva La Vida' is nothing special - X&Y was a way better. Coldplay will never be as important as Oasis and all that's left for them is useless attempts to chase Oasis glory. New Oasis album will be huge.

Jun 13, 2008

coldplay are a decent band, but no comparisons to oasis, oasis are the best british band ever!and be here now is a great album

emmascientist

Jun 13, 2008

Ok then RealEmotionalTrash, in that case I'm proud to be a dull, bland person who thinks that Viva La Vida is a brilliant album, and Coldplay are sonwriting geniuses.

Be Here Now is miles better than anything that twat Chris Martin could ever come up with. People that slag off BHN are just bangwagon jumping wankers that dont have a fucking clue what they are on about. My Big Mouth, Magic Pie, I Hope I Think I Know, The Girl in the Dirty Shirt, It's Gettin' Better Man and Fade In-Out are all classics.Coldplay are just awful. Really really awful.

X&Y actually had its moments, but they spent too much time on it and probably went mad on the production, which ruined it a bit. But it was alright in the end... hate some of the songs (Fix You is awful) but others like Low or X&Y were really good. Just like Be Here Now sounded mostly like a bad joke but had a couple of really great songs (Don't Go Away, and I Hope I Think I Know, precisely). And since Violet Hill reminds me of when I heard Go Let It Out for the first time, and thought "wow, they've become good again", I just hope there's no Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is or Who Feels Love stinker on Viva La Vida.

Jesus, why don't you find some interesting music to listen too. Would it kill you to look a little further afield than what's right in front of your noses? Coldplay are popular because their music is safe, non-offensive and easy to digest. Couple that with a huge marketing campaign, and you can guarantee a number 1 album. They seem to be perfectly happy with quantity over quality. If you want to talk about subtlety and nuances of sound, why don't you listen to some real quality, like Doves or Wilco, instead of being mindless bloody sheep.

Melody is more important than lyrical content. anyone who likes proper music will be aware of that fact. Directed @ RealEmotionaTrash (emo)

I HAVE EARS

Jun 13, 2008

Who really gives a toss? Music for the masses. People who don't have a favourite band, they just like what they hear on the radio. Oasis, Coldplay, The Verve etc they all do massive sold out stadium gigs that nobody with real taste would consider going to because the gigs are full of chavs. Oasis have been shit since '95, Coldplay have always been shit.

carrot cruncher

Jun 13, 2008

I have ears what the fuck are you on about ,maybe people like them because they are good. Arcade Fire great band love em but i also love coldplay too, chavs at a coldplay gig dont think so mate

CALL ME BLAND, CALL ME WHAT YOU LIKE, MY FAVOURITE BAND IS COLDPLAY MR. I HAVE EARS. I AM NOT A CHAV I AM A PROFESSIONAL PERSON.

Jun 14, 2008

Ha. If Oasis_Dublin knew anything about music they'd realise my username has nothing to do with emo! In my opinion Be Here Now isn't as bad as people say but there's just so much better music out there if people could be bothered to look further than Coldplay,Killers etc etc

Jun 14, 2008

hahahahah coldplay are SHITE...they serve no PURPOSE...they are JUST FOUR NICE FELLAS WHO PLAY VERY BORING MUSIC AND EAT LOTS OF TOFU XXX

Jun 16, 2008

HaHa this comments are funny, wake up mugs Be Here Now is one of the greatest albums of all time, Oasis are the best band of all time, shit since 95' haha, get on the bandwagon and put down the handbook "I Have Ears" you fool, go listen to Foals you chav, Coldplay are proper music for proper people, Viva La Vida is awsome, better than X&Y for me, although how do you pick there both mint. Also the chap who said listen to Doves, get out, and Wilco I've never even heard of them, Coldplay and Oasis are two of the biggest bands in the world because there two of the best, thankyou and goodnight.

Oasis_Dublin

Jun 16, 2008

RealEMOtionalTrash, i hope your're not actually a Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks fan. having looked further than the aforementioned bands, im well aware there are more bands out there. not many of them make anything of real quality.

Moosh2k7

Jun 16, 2008

Hmm, Coldplay= good, if a bit pretentious. Oasis= Chord-progressive guitar rock recycled over and over over for 15 long boring years. Take away their good first two albums an Oasis are just a pile of absolute tripe.

Oasis_Dublin

Jun 17, 2008

That really annoys me. Bands dont have to be constantly reinventing their music. it can have really bad results. just look at Standing on the Shoulder of Giants or anything post OK Computer by Radiohead.
