Coldplay have stormed straight into the album charts at Number One with their debut album 'Parachutes' tonight (July 16) after selling more than 70,000 copies since its release on Monday.
The band, who were one of four acts who played across the UK on the NME Carling Premier Tour in January, were said to be "thrilled and somewhat shellshocked" with their success.
A spokesperson at their record label Parlophone told nme.com: "Everybody at the label is very excited. The band have just made a great record that's captured something special. It's all built up quite naturally too, they've done it themselves without much hype. We'll all be celebrating tonight."
'Parachutes' knocked Eminem's 'Marshall Mathers LP' off the Number One slot.
Coldplay's spokesperson added that the band would be releasing another single in October to follow their last single 'Yellow', which went straight into the charts at number four earlier this month.
In other chart news, as expected, Ronan Keating went straight to number one in the singles charts tonight with his latest single 'Life Is A Rollercoaster', knocking The Corrs' 'Breathless' from the top spot.
The track, which was co-written by former New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander, features on the Boyzone singer's debut self-titled solo album, which is released in a fortnight through Polydor.
