Chris Martin reacts to Satriani's copycat claim: 'I wrote 'Viva La Vida''

Coldplay singer explains the situation to NME Radio

Coldplay's Chris Martin has told NME Radio that the similarities between their song 'Viva La Vida' and Joe Satriani's 'If I Could Fly' are entirely coincidental.

As previously reported on NME.COM, Satriani is suing Coldplay for plagiarism over the issue.

Speaking to NME Radio's Neil Cole (the full interview can be listened to below), Martin said that Coldplay have been left feeling shocked by Satriani's claims.

He said: "When these things happen it's a coincidence and we're as surprised by it as anybody else."

Martin then explained that he hadn't stolen the song and could remember precisely how he wrote it.

"Oh, I know exactly where the song ['Viva La Vida'] came from. It came from the middle of the night, on a piano. I just get embarrassed about having to talk about these things."

He also admitted feeling hurt by Satriani's allegations, saying: "I do feel a bit upset about it because I wrote the song. But, you know, these things happen. Whatever will be will be."

Despite admitting the band hadn't "had the best of days", due to the discussions about the plagiarism claim, Martin still had some positive words for Satriani, calling him an "amazing" musician.

I'm not a Coldplay fan, but honestly, this is the only way Satriani will get any form of publicity/exposure now. He makes some fuckin' clown music.

Having not heard either track I listened to both on iTunes out of interest and the melody really is 100% identical. But who knows whether it was intentionally ripped off or not?I downloaded the Joe Satriani song though as that one was pretty good!

i have to agree w/ Alan58. i think it's funny though that martin just says it's coincidental but he can't even deny the obvious similarities.

if i were mr satriani, i would not be drawing attention to the fact that i wrote a song which sounds like viva la vida, since it is a completely dreadful record.

satriani should get over himself, yes it may be a rip off but believe its completely unintentional. satriani is a boring piece of bread that can play a guitar solo and all of a sudden thinks hes the best musician of all time, well done joe!!!! personally reckon liams (yes liam) a better guitarist

tbh, maybe he heard it but didn't actually listen. maybe he was in a store and it was playing.then even YEARS later, he heard the melody in his head.Fuck it, it's hardly the best written melody ever, Satch should get over it.Lost a lotta respect for Satch. He's a good guitarist; he's one of the better shred heads. I personally hate shredding. More than anything, but I can stand Satch!

Chris actually 'ripped' himself off at one point, with 'clocks' and then with 'speed of sound'. He is partial to this type of thing......As for the 'Yesterday' 'Bohemian Rhapsody' middle of the night malarky.......In the words of a great warrior 'I pity the fool'

Stariani is a joke. Whether you like Coldplay or not, I'm pretty sure the LAST thing on their mind when writing this album is 'Hey guys - we're one track short - maybe we should rip off that American fucking cheeseball guitarist Joe Satriani!"Gimme a break...
