Coldplay's Chris Martin: 'We only won Brit Awards because there weren't any other choices'
Singer also jokes he wants to open a theme park and release his own fragrance
Coldplay's Chris Martin has said that his band only triumphed at last night's Brit Awards (February 21) because there wasn't any other competition.
They beat Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Elbow and Chase and Status to take home the gong for Best British Group, but the singer insisted it was because they were the only choice "left on the pitch" for people to vote for.
He told the Daily Mirror:
To be honest, most British bands have split up. Blur have gone, Pulp have gone, Take That are on holiday, we're the only British band left on the pitch! But we'll take that.
The frontman also joked that he wanted to expand his business interests into the fragrance market in the future, quipping: "All we want to do now is release a fragrance, open a few restaurants and open a theme park, JLS-style. We're hoping to have it tied up by 2016, look out for that."
Adele and Ed Sheeran were the big winners last night, with the former scooping prizes for British Solo Female Artist and Mastercard British Album Of The Year, although her acceptance speech for the second gong was controversially interrupted by host James Corden. Sheeran, meanwhile, walked away with the awards for British Breakthrough Act and British Male Solo Artist.
Other winners included Lana Del Rey, Bruno Mars, Rihanna and Foo Fighters.
The full list of winners was as follows:
