Coldplay's Chris Martin says One Direction are "brilliant".

The comments came as part of Martin's in-depth interview with BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe last night (April 28), in which the singer suggested that the X Factor boyband are the biggest band in the world.

Martin said: "I think One Direction are the biggest band in the world, their songs are great. I'm saying One Direction are brilliant and I'm not kidding.

"You know why? Because their songs are really good and I don't think that any of them are going to go solo. I think they appreciate their chemistry from watching their movie."

Martin also said that meeting One Direction's Harry Styles – who has attended "a couple" of Coldplay shows – gave him a hot flush. "I was like this, 'I was pretty sure I was a straight guy before' – I was having a hot flush," Martin said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Martin said that the band's new album 'Ghost Stories' was "42 minutes on an emotional treadmill". The singer said that "although it starts off seeming like a heartbreak record" the album is actually about realisation and acceptance.

'Ghost Stories' is Coldplay's sixth album and will be released on May 19. The band yesterday announced they had hidden envelopes containing frontman Chris Martin's handwritten song lyrics in libraries around the world, Fans of the band must try and find the lyric sheets via instructions from the official Coldplay Twitter account. As each one is discovered, a photo of the lyric sheet will be posted, for all of the band's fans to see. One of the hidden envelopes also contains a special Golden Ticket, containing travel and tickets to see the band perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London on July 1, one of five special gigs to launch the album.

Coldplay will play:

New York Beacon Theatre, USA (May 5)
Los Angeles Royce Hall, USA (May 19)
Glasgow Green, Radio 1's Big Weekend, UK (May 24)
Paris Casino de Paris, France (May 28)
