The Cramps' frontman dies in hospital

Lux Interior was 62

The Cramps' frontman Lux Interior died in Glendale, California today (February 4). The frontman of the highly influential New York punk band was 62.

Interior, whose real name was Erick Lee Purkhiser, passed away at Glendale Memorial Hospital at 4:30am (PST) due to a previously existing heart condition.

Interior and his wife Poison Ivy founded The Cramps in the early '70s. Having emerged from CBGB's New York punk scene, Interior was known for his wild on-stage antics, thrashing about and stripping down, reminiscent of Iggy Pop.

The Cramps have been credited with pioneering a unique sound that pairs rockabilly and surf guitar.

"Lux was a fearless frontman who transformed every stage he stepped on into a place of passion, abandon, and true freedom. He is a rare icon who will be missed dearly," The Cramps' publicist said in an official statement.

The Cramps have remained active throughout the past three decades, with Interior and Poison Ivy anchoring the line-up while other members changed.

Lux Interior and John Martyn gone in the same week. Both from different galaxies, but both equally fabulous.

Thanks for influencing a great number of bands and influencing me to grow my bangs out as a young boy.

I doubt if Lux (or John Martyn) would want to 'Rest In Peace', but agree with markiechops - both excellent in their own way. Lux was one of the ultimate rock'n'roll singers & combined with Poison Ivy, they were totally unique. Rock In Peace!

John Martyn and Lux in the same week is awful, both proper rockers and both lived longer than anyone expected ..R.I.P

This is very sad. WIthout the Cramps there wouldnt be a lot of great bands today- and Im dissapointed we wont get to see them live one more time. They were like listening to one of david lynch's nightmares on acid- imagine if the horrors actually had songs, the frontman could sing and the band were a thousand times cooler- that was the cramps.I hope he gets a proper send off.

Aphexbin hit the nail on the head with his comment about the Horrors. I was lucky enough to see them at the Astoria a few years ago, and even in their fifties, they put on one of the best shows i've ever seen. I miss him already.

No...R.I.P. He and John Martyn were from seemingly different places in so many ways, but they were both geniuses, and this really is a loss. as dennisblandford says, condolences to Poison Ivy.
