Crystal Castles' frontwoman Alice Glass has reacted to being named the coolest person in 2008.

The singer has topped the 2008 NME Cool List, beating the likes of MGMT, Ladyhawke and Oasis' Liam Gallagher to the Number One spot.

Speaking to NME.COM, Glass admitted she was unsure what to make of joining the likes of Pete Doherty, Jack White and Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner, who have all previously topped the list.

"I'm flattered, thank you, but back in school the people who held themselves in the same regard were also the biggest waste of skin I've ever met," she explained. "Why did I get so many votes? My pact with Satan hasn't expired yet."

The singer revealed she had no definition of cool herself, suggesting we "ask the mummified jazz musicians from the 1930s who started using it" instead, before adding "we need new idioms, we need to stop talking like beatniks."

my opinion of crystal castle obvioulsly doesn't sit well the scenesters at NME but i really want to express how awful this band are and how they are trying sooooo hrd to be shocking...she says that its time to stop talking like beatniks but can she not see the irony in her statement? if ever there was a pair of upper class posho students posing as being "street" it is crystal castles..i mean come on, cutting yourself for a photo shoot was sad when the manics did it and its even sadder these days...

It's hilarious to read that someone is complaining about the quality of this years top 10, right after stating they are surprised the likes of Luke Pritchard and One Night Only aren't in it. Two of musics blandest contributors. I'm sure I'll get alot of stick for saying that. Go Alice. I agree, when is Ryan Jarman and Gary for that matter going to get the topspot, they are both brilliant.

How can everyone of you hate Crystal Castles!? They are doing something different and doing it well. And Alice Glass is fuking wicked! Ive seen them live 3 times and each time was accelerating, she puts on an amazing show, how would you guys even know if you havent been? Trying to be shocking? Do you guys know anything about this band, did you bother to research anything? This band doesn't even care about being popular or in the "cool" scene, all they ever wanted to do was play basement shows, they became huge by mistake. And thank you binstig, it is great to have an outsider at number one, she deserved it!
