Crystal Castles have been honoured with the John Peel Award For Innovation at the Shockwaves NME Awards 2011 in London tonight (February 23).

Band members Alice Glass and Ethan Kath were on hand to collect the award from guest presenters Jarvis Cocker, who hosted the event last year, and Alexa Chung.

The Toronto duo are also set to perform later at the O2 Academy Brixton ceremony.

The John Peel Award For Innovation is an award only given out occasionally by NME's editors when they come across that rare thing, an act who possess a pioneering spirit and uncompromising approach to music that John Peel himself would approve of.

Previous winners of the award include Radiohead, who picked up the gong in 2008 for their 'In Rainbows' album.

Crystal Castles have recently finished headlining the Shockwaves NME Awards tour.
