It's one of the hottest releases of the year, but Daft Punk's new album may be launched in a little known, far-flung town.

Local paper The Narrabri Courier is claiming that the French duo will launch new album 'Random Access Memories' in tiny Wee Waa, New South Wales, a country town with a population of 2,100.

It says that the there will be a playback of the album at the Wee Waa Show, an annual event that also promises "a pet show, showgirl competition, cross cut saw competition, fireworks and much more". It is not yet known if the duo – Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo – will be in Wee Waa in person for the event.

Narrabri Shire Mayor Conrad Bolton tells the paper he initially thought "a mate was pulling my leg," but was soon convinced. "We think Wee Waa is so uniquely Australian, so the folks at Sony Music along with Daft Punk thought it fitted the bill perfectly," he said. "Daft Punk is known for breaking down barriers and coming up with new creative, innovative ideas to launch their albums."

It is speculated that the band's Wee Waa playback will be streamed to a worldwide audience from the Wee Waa showgrounds on May 17. Tickets for the Wee Waa Show are limited to 4000, according to Wee Waa Show Society president Brett Dickinson.

Sony have not confirmed the story, but inthemix.com.au confirmed Sony Australia had purchased the www.daftpunkweewaa.com domain name on Monday.

'Random Access Memories' is rumoured to feature guest appearances from The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, Panda Bear and Pharrell Williams plus previously announced guest artists Nile Rodgers, Gonzales and Giorgio Moroder. It is set for release on May 20.
