Welcome to the Daily Gossip: your daily stop-off to find out what the stars of the music world have been up to in the tabloids and beyond, with the help of plenty of "anonymous sources".

Today's top gossip:

Simon Cowell launched a broadside against Elton John last night, we read. The music mogul hit back at earlier comments from John by describing him as "selfish" and said he did nothing to help the music industry.

The comments came after Elton John said that The X Factor had made it much harder to get hit singles – but Cowell had a suitably sharp response. He attacked the singer for charging million of pounds for private gigs and not helping out new artists. "Go and give it [money] to a bunch of young musicians you care about, put them in the studio," he said. "Go and nurture them. Then I'll buy your argument."

It's a bit harsh, but given that Elton once said he'd "rather have his cock bitten off by an Alsatian than watch The X Factor", it's unlikely to sting that much (Daily Star).

From the papers and beyond:

Cliff Richard is turning into a rapper, kind of. According to the red-tops today (March 10), the crooner, who is currently making a new album, has said: "Don't be shocked if there is a rap or two on the record." He added that he'd love to perform with Lady Gaga and praised Adele and Leona Lewis for their "incredible, fantastic voices" (The Sun).

Elbow are on typically modest form in the tabs today, with singer Guy Garvey saying he doesn't believe he's "a natural lyricist" and that he has "to work really hard" to write songs (Daily Star).

Ne-Yo has admitted he wishes he'd kept Beyonce's 2006 single 'Irreplaceable' "for himself". He said that he really regrets giving it away (Daily Mirror).

George Michael has issued an apology to the owner of the Snappy Snaps shop he crashed his Jeep into last year. Speaking directly to the man, the singer said: "John, I'm sincerely sorry." 'John' replied: "That's fine, no problem at all." He added that he would welcome the singer if he returned to the shop, but through the front door next time (Daily Star).

Diana Vickers is reportedly writing her second album with none other than Starsailor frontman James Walsh. A source said of the collaboration: "James and Diana have been in the studio and are thrilled with the hook-up. There is a lot of admiration between them" (The Sun).

Finally, Justin Bieber fever has hit a new peak, with a pair of the diminutive pop star's shoes currently being auctioned off. The shoes were donated by the singer's grandmother to raise money for his old school, Stratford Northwestern Secondary School. According to estimates school chiefs reckon they'll fetch $10,700 (£6,600) – and that's per shoe (Can Music).
