Danger Mouse's 'Dark Night Of The Soul' project debuts in LA

Gallery opening features David Lynch images

Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and David Lynch's joint project, Dark Night Of The Soul - a collaborative multimedia effort featuring the likes of Pixies' Black Francis, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Iggy Pop and Julian Casablancas of The Strokes - premiered its visual component in Los Angeles this weekend.

Danger Mouse, Mark Linkous (aka Sparklehorse) and famed Hollywood director Lynch were on hand at a star-studded party on Friday night (May 29).

They were joined by the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, producer Rick Rubin, The Shins' James Mercer (who contributes to the album), Boom Bip and actors Ben Stiller, Laura Dern, Heather Graham and Sissy Spacek, to celebrate the launch of the exhibit.

The exhibit, which is on display at the Michael Kohn gallery in West Hollywood until July 11, features clusters of photographs created by Lynch, whose credits include 'Blue Velvet', 'Twin Peaks' and 'Mulholland Drive'.

Each set of images was inspired by the music featured on 'Dark Night Of The Soul''s 13-track album, which plays from the gallery's speakers.

The images are also featured in a hard-bound book, which was originally set to accompany the release of the album, but will instead come with a blank CD bearing a sticker with the message: "For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will." This is due to the risk of legal action from Danger Mouse's record label, EMI, which claims it is owed one more album by the producer and has not agreed to the terms of the release.

"It's a big relief and really gratifying that this is finished," Linkous told NME.COM at the exhibit opening. "I just wish people could put it in their stereos. I think it's too good an album to just disappear."
