Director of film about Smart Studios gets stars’ backing

Dave Grohl, Billy Corgan and Shirley Manson appear in the trailer for new documentary ‘The Smart Studios Story', a film about the former studios run by Butch Vig and Steve Marker of Garbage.

Director Wendy Schneider is seeking to raise $120,000 by March 30 to fund the film via Kickstarter, and has persuaded some of its former clients to appear in a trailer, which can be seen here.

“It’s pretty fascinating when you think of Smart,” said Corgan. “All these magic moments happened in basically this little shithole.” Grohl added: "Butch was one of the first producers who wanted to turn your underground garage band into something the whole world would love."

Albums at least partly recorded at Smart include Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’, Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Gish’ and Death Cab For Cutie’s ‘Narrow Stairs’. Vig, who produced ‘Nevermind’, is also the drummer of Garbage alongside bassist Marker, making the band’s album ‘Version 2.0’ at the Wisconsin studio. Opened in 1982, it closed in 2010 due to financial difficulties, but re-opened in 2013 as Clutch Sound under its new owner, film sound mixer Brian Liston.

Funders for the campaign can receive items such as a thank-you card signed by musicians who have recorded at Smart, a credit in the film and dinner with Vig and Marker.
