Cream will also be honoured

David Bowie is to receive a special Grammy next month.

The singer, along with Cream, country star Merle Haggard and the late comedian Richard Pryor are amongst the recipients of the Recording Academy’s 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Also set to honoured for their career-long artistic contributions are blues legend Robert Johnson, opera singer Jessye Norman and folk band The Weavers.

According to Reuters, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, producer Owen Bradley and engineer Al Schmidt will receive the Trustees Award, presented for non-performing contributions to the industry.

Tom Dowd, the engineer and producer who was the subject of the 2003 documentary ‘Tom Dowd And The Language Of Music’ and Bell Labs/Western Electric will receive Technical Grammy Awards.

The special merit gongs – as well as posthumous tributes to Pryor, Johnson, Bradley and Dowd - are to be presented during a ceremony on February 7 and recognised during the Grammy Awards the following day (February 8).

The Grammy Awards are set to take place at Los AngelesStaples Center and will be broadcast in the US through CBS from 8-11.30pm.
