David Byrne disses U2 tour spending

Former Talking Head says he's feeling 'less than charitable'

David Byrne has criticised U2 on his blog, saying their world tour costs are excessive.

He has also complained that he was jilted from a New York TV slot earlier this year so they could play five nights in a row.

Blogging from Europe while on tour, Byrne wrote: "Those stadium shows may possibly be the most extravagant and expensive (production-wise) ever: $40 million to build the stage and, having done the math, we estimate 200 semi trucks crisscrossing Europe for the duration. It could be professional envy speaking here, but it sure looks like, well, overkill, and just a wee bit out of balance given all the starving people in Africa and all."

The former Talking Heads frontman then went on to reveal that he lost out on a performance on 'The Late Show With David Letterman' in March, when U2 secured a five-night residency to promote their 'No Line On The Horizon' album.

"Or maybe it's the fact that we were booted off our 'Letterman' spot so U2 could keep their exclusive week-long run that's making me less than charitable? Take your pick, but thanks guys!” Byrne wrote.

Why shouldn't U2 be able to do this, it's thier money they're spending at the end of the day.

Thats not the point Byrne is trying to make Museician... Its the fact that God and co. spend so much money on sickeningly overblown concerts, when the very ethics of Bono are to 'save the world' be it from only filling his jet once a week or cutting down to 5 new leather jackets a day. Does anyone acually listen to U2 any more??? they hav'nt made a good LP in over 15 years...

That´s right seamonkey no one listens to U2 anymore. The tour will consist of God & co. playing to empty stadiums for their own enjoyment.

No-one's stopping them, Museician, and no-one begrudges their stadium-filling sloganeering, Zcorpio; that's their right. It's just that Dave, seamonkey and I are calling them for the messianic, self-righteous twats that they are, and that's our right too.

Shit if U2 have not had a decent album in over 15 years how long has it been for David Byrne and talking heads - 50 years. Did not even know this guy was still alive let alone singing. Maybe we should not worry about saving Africa we should start save this washed up singer fund (you know the one that cannot get 10 people to a pub to watch him play) maybe we can do a collection at the next U2 concert the one with 90,000 people.
