David Lynch’s ‘Blue Velvet’ to return to theatres ahead of 30th anniversary

New York’s ‘Film Forum’ will screen Lynch's 1986 classic

David Lynch’s Blue Velvet is to receive a run of special screenings in the approach of it’s 30th anniversary, it has been announced (March 3).

Blue Velvet remains one of Lynch’s most revered films, alongside other famous films such as Eraserhead, Mullholand Drive, Lost Highway and classic US TV drama Twin Peaks.

The film sees student Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) team up with a detective’s daughter Sandy Williams (Laura Dern) after finding a severed ear in a field. They believe beautiful lounge singer Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) may be connected with the case, and Beaumont finds himself becoming drawn into her dark, twisted world, where he encounters sexually depraved psychopath Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper).

As reported by FACT, New York’s ‘Film Forum’ will screen the Lynch classic ahead of its September birthday, running between March 25-31. It is expected that additional screenings will be released in the US and UK through Park Circus Films closer to the anniversary date. A UK reissue of the film is also expected in Autumn 2016.

The announcement of the re-release came with an updated trailer, which you can watch below.

Lynch collaborated with Julee Cruise and Angelo Badalamenti for the films memorable soundtrack, as with his 90’s show, Twin Peaks.

Fans are already looking toward 2017 with a new season of Twin Peaks, which is said to premiere in the first half of next year. It is said that Lynch is more than halfway through his shooting for Twin Peaks, which first aired in 1990. Naomi Watts and Tom Sizemore have reportedly signed up to appear in the new series.

The series, which will arrive on US and UK screens in 2017, would see Watts working with director David Lynch once more having starred as Betty Elms in Mulholland Drive. As yet there are no reports as to which characters Watts and Sizemore will play.

However, Deadline states that David Lynch will reprise his role as FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole when the series returns.

This comes off the back of the news that Sherilyn Fenn has reportedly agreed to appear in the new series of Twin Peaks with her character Audrey Horne returning alongside Kyle MacLachlan’s Dale Cooper.

It is reported that Lara Flynn Boyle has opted against a return but that Miguel Ferrer will revive his role as FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield while David Patrick Kelly is said to be reprising his role as Jerry Horne. Meanwhile, Sheryl Lee has been photographed on the set as Laura Palmer.

Amanda Seyfried, Laura Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Robert Knepper and Balthazar Getty are all rumoured to have been cast as new characters alongside original cast members.

Director David Lynch and his Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost have penned one long script for the series, which Lynch will shoot as a continuous movie before editing it down into individual episodes.

Although Showtime originally commissioned nine new episodes of Twin Peaks, it is expected to run considerably longer. Lynch announced in April 2015 that he had pulled out of the revival series, but then announced the following month that he was back on board to direct the new episodes.
