Death Cab For Cutie singer Ben Gibbard has unveiled a new track titled 'Ichiro’s Theme' – scroll down to hear it.

The song is a homage to US baseball player Ichiro Suzuki, who was traded to the New York Yankees after a 12-year run at the Seattle Mariners on Monday (July 23).

"I wrote this a few years ago," Gibbard wrote, posting the track on his Soundcloud page. "Today seems like the best day to let you all hear it. Thank you, Ichiro."

Last week Gibbard announced that he will be releasing his debut solo album, 'Former Lives', on October 15. The album will be put out via the City Slang label and comprises 12 songs, which were written over a period spanning eight years. The release will be supported by a short tour.

The songs were finally recorded when Gibbard moved from Seattle to Los Angeles, and were laid down at Aaron Espinoza's studio, The Ship.

Death Cab For Cutie released their seventh album 'Codes & Keys' in 2011, following it up with UK shows. The band formed in Washington in 1997 and went on to release their debut album, 'Something About Airplanes', the following year. It was preceded by the demo 'You Can Play These Songs with Chords', which was written and performed entirely by Gibbard under the Death Cab For Cutie name.

Gibbard and She And Him's Zooey Deschanel filed for divorce late last year. The divorce papers listed "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their break-up. The pair – who tied the knot in December 2009 – were married for two years.
