Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter has released a statement on behalf of the band following the death of bassist Chi Cheng over the weekend.

Cheng died on Saturday (April 13) following injuries sustained in a car crash five years ago. Cheng, a founding member of the band along with singer Chino Moreno, had been in a "partially conscious state" since a 2008 car accident. In a statement posted on behalf of the band, Stephen Carpenter said that "there will be a hole in our lives where Chi once was." The former bass player in the heavy rock band was just 42 when he passed away.

Carpenter's statement reads: "There are so many things I can say, and yet at this moment, none of it matters or compares to the loss everyone feels. There will be a hole in our lives where Chi once was. But that will be filled everyday with all of our love and memories we all have in our heart. He will always be here because of love. It's time we all give our love and best, and do our best to love. Especially ourselves, Chi would want that for everyone. All our healing will begin with love. I love you Chi."

Figures from the world of rock and metal have all paid tribute to Cheng since his death, including Slash and Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance. Other tributes came from Frank Turner, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Dev Hynes, Wild Beasts, Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon, Skrillex, and Duran Duran, whose song 'The Chauffeur' was covered by Deftones in 2005. Scroll down to see a full collection of the tributes paid to Chi Cheng now.

Cheng suffered major injuries and was left in a coma after being involved in a car crash in 2008. The bassist was driving in the car with his sister when he collided with a car head on. While his sister only suffered minor injuries as she was wearing a seatbelt, Cheng was ejected through the window.
