THE OP GOES HIP HOP

Beyonce Knowles is set to take the title role in 'Carmen: A Hip Hopera'...

DESTINY'S CHILD singer BEYONCE KNOWLES is set to star in a made-for-MTV movie 'CARMEN: A HIP HOPERA' set for broadcast during the second half of 2001, it was announced today (January 18).

The drama, touted by MTV as the 'first hip hop musical', puts a contemporary spin on the Carmen musical of unrequited love, betrayal and murder.

Rapper Da Brat narrates the tale, moved to modern-day Philadelphia, where Mekhi Porter, familiar to fans of Spike Lee's 'Clockers', stars as Hill, a police officer who becomes obsessed with Carmen (Beyonce) becoming embroiled in a web of robbery, suspicion and deceit.

Also featured in the film will be So So So Def rappers Lil Bow Wow and Jermaine Dupri, as well as Rah Digga.
