Devendra Banhart joins Gilberto Gil at the Hollywood Bowl

Pair mix modern and classic Latin American flavours

Devendra Banhart joins Gilberto Gil at the Hollywood Bowl
Devendra Banhart joined one of his idols - veteran Brazilian artist Gilberto Gil - onstage at the Hollywood Bowl last night (June 29).

The pair, who performed as part of KCRW's World Festival series, expressed their mutual admiration for one another and gave the massive Bowl audience two very distinct but connected sets.

Banhart, backed by his five-piece band, performed '60s Brazilian and folk-influenced tunes in English, Spanish and Portuguese and thanked the audience in all three languages. "Happy birthday two days ago Gilberto Gil," Banhart announced. "Thank you for playing for us tonight."

The lanky singer shimmied across the stage for several numbers, allowing his band members to share the spotlight and vocal duties on some tracks.

They soon made way for Gil, who performed with a six-piece rock band, which included his son on guitar. The veteran musician, who spearheaded the Tropicalia movement in the 1960s and currently serves as Brazil's minister of culture, took the audience on an audio tour of his country's most famous musical styles.

"Thank you for letting us begin the summer with you," he said before showcasing modernised versions of sambas and even Bob Marley's reggae classic 'Three Little Birds'.

Dressed all in white with dreadlocks tied neatly in a ponytail, 66-year-old Gil gave it his all, dancing and jumping around the stage like a man half his age.

Gil invited Banhart to join him on stage for his final number. Banhart seemed humbled by the invitation and was content to provide backing vocals while standing behind Gil, who insisted he come up and share the spotlight. The upbeat number caused most of the Bowl crowd to jump out of their seats and dance before the pair strode off arm-in-arm.
