Dirty Pretty Things split up – exclusive

Carl Barat and co call it a day

Dirty Pretty Things have split up.

In an exclusive statement to NME.COM the four piece – Carl Barat, Didz Hammond, Gary Powell and Anthony Rossomando – announced the break-up of the band that formed in 2005 following the split of The Libertines.

Frontman Carl Barat explained that the members of the band would be pursuing new musical projects, but that these would not involve The Libertines.

"It is with some sadness we announce the farewell of the Dirty Pretty Things," the statement read. "It's been a glorious three years which we all would gladly live out again, but it is time for us to try new things (not The Libertines).

"We are reluctant to give up touring but will give the last waltz everything. We have and are determined to go out as we came in, after which we all have other ventures to be getting on with and splendid future plans.

"Heartfelt thanks to all who made it what it was, much love and we'll see you on the road."

NME.COM has taken a look back at Dirty Pretty Things' career, which you can read here.

The band's 11-date UK tour, set to kick off in Glasgow on Saturday (October 4), will still go ahead.

Shame, the first album and it's tour were great. I wasnt to keen on the last single, and at their performance at Leeds fest, you could tell something was up, so maybe its for the best. All the best for the future.

Gutted. Underrated band, impossible for Barat to lose The Libertines tag, but can't wait to see them in Manchester next week.

I agree with Sinsybinsy, they're shit and I'm glad to see the back of them. I really hope the Libertines DO NOT get back together as a result of this - they were equally as shit. The best thing Barat can do is stay well away from Doherty and do his own stuff.

Underrated band indeed. This is a(nother) sad new for music. Good luck to each of them for the future and thanks for what has been.

Short of dying - Nothing any of them do will ever be better than The Libertines or stop the speculation of a return. With DPT over and Babyshambles as rocky as ever then maybe the time is right for them to give it a shot. What's the worst that could happen? At least if they fucked it up then we could move on.

Never mind the Libertines, we want a Coopers reunion. Come back Didz.

i'm so close to tears :( and to all the people who are just using this page to insult them, then really, stop wasting your time and go do something worthwhile

Captain Pin

Oct 2, 2008

i'm really dissapointed about this. after many listens, i've grown to be very fond of the latest album 'romance at short notice'. underrated in my opinion. it seems strange that they've decided to call it a day after alledging to be a closer unit now following the albums recording. As a big Libs fan of course I hope despite carl stating it wont, that this may lead to them reforming, but how many times have we heard that story? A shame all in all and best of luck to them all in whatever they choose to do next..

moviegurl16

Oct 2, 2008

NOOO! :'(shite, I really loved this band and as a yank was hoping they would come to the states because I did not get a chance to see them when they came with their first album. At least you brits get to see them live for the last time, you people are lucky, yes you are.

its_rudimentary

Oct 2, 2008

Its a little harsh to say Pete was all the talent because Babyshambles have hardly set the world on fire...the first DPT album was solid, some good tunes on it, Deadwoods awesome, but they were a great craic live and that should always be the main level on which to judge a band. At least Carl created a real band and is not surrounded by yes men and hangers on. I'll miss em even if it seems most people won't.

its_rudimentary

Oct 2, 2008

By the way....I think the death knell was doing T4 on the beach that really showed they were on the ropes. Don't bring back the Libs though except for maybe a couple of one-off last minute shows no-one knows about till it happens otherwise the legacy will most probably be soiled...

shipo1975

Oct 2, 2008

First album was alright and thats about it. Still relyed on the old libs tracks to get the crowd going.I reckon Didz ought to go and have a word with Ben, Tom, Kieron and co and get the mighty coopers back on the road. life hasn't really been quite the same since they split

thecurators

Oct 2, 2008

come on guys don't throw in the towel yet!of course carl isn't going to turn around and say 'urm yeah libertines reuinion waheyyy' it'll kill all the suspense surrounding it altogether!by him keeping it at bay it'll make it even better when they do, and i'm sure they will eventually.

Jimmy_Bass

Oct 2, 2008

decent first album but lost interest after that really... we can only hope for a Cooper temple Clause reunion!!!

kim08

Oct 2, 2008

People who refer to bands as 'underated' are in a very small minority...I'm sure I speak for the majority when I say just how 'overated' they were!

scottmanstar

Oct 2, 2008

Half the comments say they were great..the other half say they were shite...the sad thing is, they were just average!

The 2nd earl of Rochester

Oct 2, 2008

Well as bad as teh last album was i was a fan of teh band. Waterloo to anywhere has some fucking great tunes on it and lets face it people, in a world littered with very poor bands i'd rather have one good tune from romance at short notice than three or four albums worth of razorlight, kaiser chiefs, courteeners, scouting for girls shite etc!!!!!lets hope we see something from all of them again sooncheers

RealMode

Oct 2, 2008

i don't fancy DPT, but i hope everything is alright with them and that they're not depressed or anything. c'mon, u can still do other projects!

billytheshroom

Oct 2, 2008

I'm not really surprised - their last album was pretty tedious. They weren't ever too good live either judging from the 3 times I've seen them. On the Libertines reforming - bad idea. I LOVE the Libertines first album, but if they reformed they would never be able to recatch that spark and excitement they generated back then, and everyone would just think they're a shit band, ignoring their past brilliance. Leave them be.

kgpmusic1992

Very disspointed absoutle class they were. Im really hoping that libertines reform absoulte pro's. R.I.P DPT
