DJ Shadow has released his first new music since 2014 in the shape of his new track ‘The Mountain Will Fall’.

Shadow, whose real name is Josh Davis, released his first album ‘Entroducing’ 20 years ago in 1996, and he told Pitchfork that the new record represented a conscious effort to move on from the sample-based techniques he pioneered and perfected throughout his career. Recently, through a gig DJing at the revered LA club night Low End Theory and subsequent sets at Festivals and collaborations with Diplo, Shadow found himself wanting a change of sonic scenery.

Of the difference in approach between ‘Entroducing’ and ‘The Mountain Will Fall’, he said: “The same way I was trying to push the boundaries then, I’m trying to push my own boundaries now.”

The new album features collaborations with artists as diverse as Run the Jewels, Nils Frahm and Ernie Fresh. He says he deliberately wanted to limit the number of acts he worked with, saying “I don’t really want it to be one of these records where it’s this hot rapper, this hot rapper, this feature.”

‘The Mountain Will Fall’ is due out on 24 June, on Mass Appeal.
