Doves made a triumphant return to Los Angeles on Saturday night (May 16), performing their first LA show in nearly five years for a packed house at the Wiltern Theatre.
The Manchester trio, augmented by a keyboardist, played tracks spanning their career during their 90-minute set. They kicked things off with 'Jetstream', the opening track from their new album 'Kingdom Of Rust'.
"Jesus, man, it's been a long time since we've played here and it's good that you're with us," frontman Jimi Goodwin told the huge crowd, who cheered back in response.
"It's Saturday night and you're dressed for a night on the town," he added, surveying the audience. "There's even a couple fucking in the top row."
Throughout the evening, the band projected a diverse array of video images on a giant screen behind them. The audience clapped along to several new tracks, but the biggest cheers were reserved for older classics including 'Pounding' and 'Rise'.
"We have a history of bringing people together," Goodwin said before launching into new tune '10:03'. "Kids, marriage, it's ace. But when it comes to our relationships we're all train wrecks," he quipped.
At the end of the night the band returned for a four-song encore that began with 'Firesuite', the band's instrumental song from their 2000 debut album 'Lost Souls'.
Then, for 'Here It Comes', drummer Andy Williams took the microphone to play harmonica and sing while vocalist Goodwin took over the drum kit.
Doves ended their set with the crowd-pleaser 'There Goes The Fear', which saw the whole band pounding the skins for a Brazilian-style drum finale.
Earlier in the evening, New Hampshire quartet Wild Light kicked things off. The band, which features former Arcade Fire member Tim Kyle, performed several tracks from their recent debut album 'Adult Nights'.
