Doves close opening night on Glastonbury's John Peel Stage

Trio round off the day with a storming set and a blast from the past

Doves headlined the John Peel Stage tonight (June 26) as the first day of Glastonbury 2009 drew to a close.

Performing in front of a loud, enthusiastic crowd, the trio immediately had the audience bouncing along to the likes of 'Pounding' and 10.03'.

"Listen, no Manchester," joked Jimi Goodwin with the crowd midway through the set after there were chants for the band's home city. "Glastonbury! You've got to broaden your horizons, lads."

Later Goodwin toasted the crowd, declaring them "magic people" before raising a drink to the other bands headlining the festival tonight.

He then introduced 'The Cedar Room', declaring the song got its "first play on this stage [the then-new band stage] in 1998!"

The band briefly left the stage afterwards, but returned for an encore featuring 'Here It Comes', 'There Goes The Fear' and - by their original incarnation Sub Sub - closer 'Spaceface'.

The band then left the stage with giant images of John Peel projected onto their backdrop.

Doves played:

'Jetstream'
'Snowden'
'Winter Hill'
'Pounding'
'10.03'
'Words'
'The Greatest Denier'
'Kingdom Of Rust'
'Black And White Town'
'The Outsiders'
'The Cedar Room'
'Here It Comes'
'There Goes The Fear'
'Spaceface'

What a fuckin band.No hype needed they put the likes of coldplay and the killers well into the shade.NME and the knobs who read it these days need to look in the mirror and realise the next new big thing ain't always what you expect.A criminally underrated band who shouldn't need any exposure.

Doves are absolutely fucking brilliant. All the other fucking shit bands that the NME sucks off should listen to any Doves album to hear how it's done, and then kill themselves out of a realisation of just exactly how fucking rubbish they are in comparison.

i agree doves are excellent. wipe the floor off other bands. i've seen them so many times and they are always entertain, but am i the only one who thought they were a little out of sync the other night? either a beat out of time or something. something wasn't right... some songs seemed a little slower when performed live.
