Only 30 people attend 800-capacity East 17 gig in Dublin

The boy band appeared at the Academy venue on Thursday (June 25)

Nineties boy band East 17 played to just 30 people at their recent show in Dublin.

The group are reduced to the duo of original members John Hendy and Terry Coldwell, plus the new addition Robbie Craig. Lead singers Brian Harvey and Tony Mortimer left in 2010 and 2013 respectively.

They played at The Academy in Dublin last Thursday (June 25), with a fraction of the venue’s 800 capacity showing up. The band delayed their performance for an hour before finally taking to the stage.

One fan in attendance, Tom Flynn, told The Sun: “They looked so ridiculous performing to nobody. Tony Mortimer and Brian Harvey, who sang all their big hits, aren’t with the band any more. So you just have the guys that did the dancing, John Hendy and Terry Coldwell, with a new singer called Robbie Craig.”

Singer Brian Harvey recently spoke about his history of mental illness and depression. He discussed an incident that occurred previously which saw him storming out of a hospital and contemplating suicide.

Harvey said: “I could have walked out of that place that night, walked off and jumped off a bridge. Because, I tell you what: I felt like it.”

The singer continued: “We need a walk-in centre specifically designed for when, in the middle of the night, someone thinks ‘I am going to hang myself’ or ‘I am going to a forest and jump out of a tree with a noose around my neck’, because I have thought of all these things. Desperation takes over.”

Harvey claims to have suffered from depression for 13 years and stated that he finds life difficult around the Christmas period due to his former band’s hit song ‘Stay Another Day’ being played heavily during the festive season.
