Echo And The Bunnymen close SXSW day one

Band play late-night show at Austin bash

Echo And The Bunnymen were one of the last bands to play on the first day of South By Southwest this year, playing in the early hours of this morning (March 19).

Ian McCulloch's band played after Juliette Lewis and The New Romantiques’ set at Emo’s , taking the stage half an hour late, at 1am (CST).

Lengthy queues outside the venue meant that the show was one of the busiest of the first full day of music programming at the festival, yet frontman McCullouch was typically unimpressed.

Wearing his trademark black coat despite the hot Texan weather and black sunglasses throughout, he remarked, "Jesus, haven’t you spoken enough today?", to a fan calling out to him. He also stopped playing 1999 hit 'Rust' halfway through, saying, "I don’t wanna do that, its too sad".

Lighting a cigarette before playing 'The Killing Moon', the frontman was helped along by the huge crowd who sang along to the 1984 hit.

Echo And The Bunnymen played:

'Going Up'
'Crocodiles'
'Rescue'
'Stormy Weather'
'Seven Seas'
'Bring On The Dancing Horses'
'The Disease'
'All That Jazz'
'Rust'
'The Killing Moon'
'The Cutter'

Younger fans of NME.COM could do worse than check out the Bunnymen's back catalogue, especially 1980- 85 era and see where the likes of Interpol, white lies etc get most of their influences from......perhaps its time for the god like genius award to go to these gods of alt. rock....come on guys!

I agree. Both The Bunnies and The Mary Chain should be shown their proper dues by the NME.

I think that Interpol and Editors also take from 1980s French bands Marquis de Sade and Marc Seberg. The former was roughly a contemporary of Joy Division and Echo & The Bunnymen. I think I read somewhere that one from Interpol lived in Paris at a time when Marc Seberg was still going...
