Echo And The Bunnymen to blast 'Ocean Rain' album into space

Plus band announce limited-edition version of the album

Echo And The Bunnymen are set to launch a copy of their 1984 album 'Ocean Rain' into space.

NASA astronaut Timothy Kopra is set to take a copy of the classic album, his favourite record, with him when he blasts off to the International Space Station on June 13.

The mission ties in with a box set reissue of the album, set for release on May 30. The set will include a live version of the album recorded in the Liverpool Arena last November, plus a DVD documentary and booklet.

The first 1,000 copies ordered will be signed by frontman Ian McCulloch and guitarist Will Sergeant.

See the band's official website, Bunnymen.com, for more information.

Echo And The Bunnymen will release a new studio album, 'The Fountain', in September.

The best bunnymen album and one of the best albums of the last twenty-five years. Lay down thy raincoat and groove, as the manager used to say...

It's a classic record and the martians have been waiting a long time to hear it's beauty....i really feel that it is time to praise the Bunnymen NME...godlike genius maybe? think of how they have influenced todays bands, and the way they fought against Warners for so many years to follow their own path...they were a direct influence on the Stone roses, oasis, interpol, manics, pavement, horrors, even U2 ripped them off....it's time now.

if he could take every single album the Kaiser Chiefs have ever had pressed with him and jettison it up there the world would be eternally grateful.

This is intriguing news indeed. On behalf of the post-punk loving peoples of Venus and Mars I would just like to say, "Thankyou for this superlative interstellar gift and it couldn't come at a better time as the envoy from Alpha Centauri has robbed our last copy of Wilder by The Teardrop Explodes and we've worn out our copy of To The Shores Of Lake Placid too. We'll send up a probe as soon as it arrives. Also, when is Julian coming back? We need a couple of Mellotron parts urgently! Oh and can you get Bill Drummond to ring Gruad (aka The Dealy Lama) c/o The Atlantean Federation of Papa New Guinea immediately. They're still waiting for the gig that was scheduled almost 30 years ago. Over and out!"

hness -that is an excellent idea about the 'Godlike genius' award. How about it, NME? Flaming Lips and Hole have also bigged them up over the years...added to which, 2009 marks the thirtieth anniversary of their 'Pictures On My Wall' debut single. It really IS time.

I think that this is a wondeful idea and look forward to other bands joining in. But why stop at sending a single copy? We could blast every copy of the entire U2 back catalogue into the heart of the sun. That would be a Beautiful Day indeed.
