Ed Sheeran has hit out at the Westboro Baptist Church after it picketed his gig in Kansas City.

The singer, who is currently supporting Taylor Swift on her US tour, was playing at The Midland venue when members of the church, known for its extreme homophobic views and famed for its 'God Hates Fags' placards, protested outside the venue.

"To the people picketing outside the arena. Keep your homophobic views to yourself, it's 2013," Sheeran tweeted.

Prior to the gig, the church had released a statement calling Taylor Swift the "whorish face of doomed America" and dubbing her the "the poster child for the young whores of doomed America".

As Pink News points out, the church recently attacked the Queen for giving Royal Assent to the equal marriage bill for England and Wales, calling her "Queen of fags".

Ed Sheeran recently revealed that record companies he spoke to in his early days told him he was unmarketable because of his image. "Every single label I had gone to at the time had told me this song wasn't a hit this song wouldn't work and the fact that I was slightly chubby and ginger wasn’t a good 'marketing tool' for them," he said.
