Ed Sheeran has scored his first Number One album in the US with his second album 'X'.

The singer beat Sam Smith, who is currently at Number Two, to the top spot on the Billboard chart, meaning that it is the first time two British solo artists have achieved the feat since Eric Clapton and Sting did it in 1993, the BBC reports.

'X' sold 210,000 copies in the US last week, while Smith's debut 'In the Lonely Hour' racked up sales of 67,000.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that 'X' had overtaken Daft Punk's 'Random Access Memories' as the most streamed album ever in a single week on Spotify. Since its release last week (June 23), the singer's second album has been streamed 6,248,130 times (beating Daft Punk’s existing record in the UK, with 6,181,583 streams).

Globally, the album has also scored the most 'week one' streams of an album in Spotify's history, with 23,792,476 streams, beating Eminem’s 22,780,154 streams of 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2' in November 2013.

Last week, 'X' become the fastest-selling UK album of 2014 after shifting more than 182,000 copies this week – over 14,000 more copies than previous best seller, Coldplay’s 'Ghost Stories,' according to the Official Charts Company.

'X' features Sheeran's singles 'One' and 'Sing', the latter of which became his first UK Number One Single last month.
