Elbow: 'Mercury win is best thing that's ever happened to us'

Guy Garvey overawed by Mercury Music Prize victory

Elbow claimed that their Nationwide Mercury Prize victory is "the best thing that's ever happened to us" during their acceptance speech tonight (September 9) in London.

The group, who were awarded a £20,000 cheque for their fourth album 'The Seldom Seen Kid', seemed genuinely overawed at their accolade.

Speaking from the podium, singer Guy Garvey said: "Thank you very much. I'd like to thank all the players we've been with since day one, including Phil Chadwick, our manager.

"This is the best thing that's ever happened to us. We'd like to dedicate this award to Bryan Glancy, one of the greatest men who ever lived. Thank you very much and have a top evening!"

Glancy, a late friend of the band, is honoured by the band as 'the seldom seen kid' of the album's title.

Garvey later explained his surprise at the band's victory, saying: "I had a tenner on Radiohead. It just feels great, very unexpected. You look at it in the same way as Bedouin tribes look at a pint of milk. It doesn't happen very often but it's all the sweeter.

"It's been a long time we've been doing it so it's cause for celebration. To the rest of the lads I'm so proud to do it with it with my best mates.

Referring to Badly Drawn Boy's 2001 win for 'The Hour Of The Bewilderbeast', bassist Pete Turner said: "I live three doors down from Damon Gough who won it so I can hold my head up high and give him the finger!"

Speaking about Bryan Glancy, Garvey explained: "Miss him everyday, he was a great man he should be stood here in many ways.

"The trophy will be sat on Mandy Glancy's mantle piece, his mum, she's a very special lady. He was a dude and everyone who has done music in Manchester knows who he was. It was an album that celebrates his life and we're very proud to have known him."

Elbow triumphed against stiff competition from a variety of artists including Radiohead, British Sea Power, Laura Marling and the bookies' favourite, Burial.

I am so happy Elbow have got their just reward. I watched the awards on BBC and they seemed so genuinely overwhelmed to win. It meant more to them than it would have to any of the other nominees I believe, which even discounting the brilliance of the album, was enough to leave me very pleased that they picked up the prize. Well done Elbow. Delighted for you.

Though I think 'In Rainbows' was the obvious winner (OK Computer lost out to the Merucry Prize to someone random like M People didn't they?...whats up with that mercury prize judges?)BUT...Elbow's album is by far the best choice outside of Radiohead. A great band who seem to be under a lot of peoples radar. It's a beautiful album and they were fantastic at Glastonbury so Im happy for them

I generally just don't understand The Mercury Music Awards, I mean what do they judge on? Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" is my album of the year and it doesn't even make the shortlist. I mean number one in 33 countries not enough for you? The other one was Duffy, the best female vocalist in years and yet she doesn't make the shortlist...the judges want there heads looking at. And so to the awards night. It just had to be The Last Shadow Puppets really, just a perfect perfect album with the greatest songwriter of his generation and brilliant strings arranged by Mr Pallet. I would have settled for British Sea Power to win as well one of the most exiting bands for a long time. Elbow are just an absolutley horrendous band with no songs. Why are TLSP more famous and on tv and radio more than Elbow? Beacuse there better simple as that, Rant Over.

Seldom Seen Kid was a terrific album, delighted to see Elbow win it

Nonsense...Elbow shouldn’t have been given that award...the albums ok but it sounds like many others and there are far more innovative albums on that Mercury shortlist. The Mercury prize has less to do with great, new and exciting music each year and more to do with the panel making a choice that no one could have possibly predicted. It wouldnt surprise me if next year they pick another 12 albums and then announce there is no winner or an album that wasn’t on the fking list.... oh the shock it all. What a load of tripe.

Who the f**k are Burial? On second thoughts I don't want to know. The worst awards show ever. Official.

Tough, I'll tell you anyway - Burial was an mystery-identity innovative project with some fantastic music coming out. No-one really specualted as to who was making the music, just took it as some really good shit. As soon as the Mercury Prize nominees are announced, he announces his identity and posts a picture, saying he wants to put an end to specualtion and wants it to be 'all about the tunes man'........... Just very clever timing, in my opinion and any artistic integrity sort of just went.......I'm glad Elbow won but Foals should have been up and Adele and Duffy should fuck off.

"Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" is my album of the year"Oh dear, not heard many albums this yeard then?

Foals album isn't that great, and the record companies have to put up money for their artists to be nominated. nevertheless, the Mercury awards are still one of the most highly revered music awards there is.

Sounded are you serious? Elbow's album is beautiful, and self produced, a brilliant piece of work. Far superior to Coldplay

go watch the brit awards soundedd its not about record sales its about how good an album it is elbow are an amazing band it deserved the win

Coldplay and Duffy the best albums of the year? Elbow have no songs? Dear god Soundedd you really need to wipe your arse before you start talking out of it. The stench is overwhelming!

Thats a really poor argument tom00. Who decides what is good, a few muppets on here I don't think so. Generally I think record sales is a very good way of going on who the best artists are in there genre because otherwise it's your opinion against mine. Katy Perry is good at singing ridiculous horrible cheesy pop songs and Coldplay are good at producing world class definitive and legendary rock songs. Elbow are just a horrible horrible band and just like Foals they'll never be as big or sucsessful and why....because there not as good. So don't be one of them people who "trys to be different" by liking crap bands like Foals and Elbow. A lot of people like Coldplay because they are world and I repeat WORLD CLASS, now I bought the Glasvegas album today, there a good new band. As for Duffy shes the best singer-songwriter of her generation just a perfect perfect voice mixed with a wonderful retro sound. Lot to learn rubbersoul7, mozafan and albumental lot to learn lads :)
