Elbow awarded freedom of Bury with 'Slumdog Millionaire' director

Director Danny Boyle also honoured at ceremony

Elbow have been given what could be considered their most prestigious accolade yet – the freedom of their hometown Bury.

The multi-award winning band were given the accolade on Monday (May 11) alongside 'Slumdog Millionaire' director Danny Boyle and paralympian Zoe Robinson, who also hail from the town.

Elbow singer Guy Garvey told the Manchester Evening News
that the honour compared well to their Mercury, Brit and NME Awards wins of recent times.

"In some ways this was the highlight of our career so far," he said. "It's great to be at home with Danny and Zoe. You go to some ceremonies and they are televised and the celebrities are there, but this was the real deal."

Oscar winner Boyle added: "It's been lovely to get this award. It's the generosity and spirit in which it's given that makes it so important."
