Elbow, Katy Perry, Joe Lean rock V Festival Stafford
Northern leg of festival enjoys glorious sunshine
Guy Garvey led Manchester multi-award-winners Elbow through a triumphant 6pm set on the V Stage.
The band drew one of the largest main crowds today as they rounded off the sensational live campaign for 'The Seldom Seen Kid' that saw them become one of the largest bands in the UK.
After playing 'Forget Myself', Garvey declared that it was time for a "classic Elbow reverse Mexican wave", uniting the crowd in the ritual before powering into 'Leaders Of The Free World'. They later climaxed with seasoned festival anthem 'One Day Like This'.
Pop sensation Katy Perry meanwhile took to a sun-blasted 4Music stage in red hot-pants and a white crop-top. The singer belted out hits 'Hot N Cold' and 'Thinking Of You' before giving the crowd what they really wanted with breakthrough smash 'I Kissed A Girl'.
Earlier Scottish veterans, The Proclaimers were greeted with huge cheers as they belted out crowd favourites and 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)' alongside 1989 single 'I'm On My Way and 2007 single 'Whole Wide World'.
At the Virgin Media Union tent, Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong played to a small but appreciative audience, with tracks including early single 'Lucio Starts Fires' going down a treat with fans.
Frontman Joe Lean wore tight sparkly trousers for the performance, which saw the band play a raft of unreleased songs. At one point, Lean thanked the audience for turning up to watch the band, who have been re-recording their debut album. "We've been away for ages," he said before thanking fans for sticking by the London band.
V Festival Stafford continues tonight with performances by Lady GaGa, MGMT and headliners Oasis.
