Elbow bassist Pete Turner has confirmed that the band have begun work on their sixth album, the follow-up to 2011's 'Build A Rocket Boys!' and this year’s 'Dead In The Boot' rarities compilation.

"The B-sides album is something we'd been planning for a long time," Turner told NME. "We're all big fans of the Smashing Pumpkins B-sides album 'Pisces Iscariot' and we’d always wanted to do our own one day. So it's not a case of buying time between albums – we've already started working on our next one up in Manchester, and we've got about 10 songs ready. It’s too early to say what it sounds like."

Turner also described the band's joy at performing at the Olympics closing ceremony, and the effect it had on sales. "The actual day was quite odd – a lot of waiting around and then 10 minutes performing," he said. "Afterwards, 'One Day Like This' went in the Top 10 for the first time – it had been a Top 40 hit twice but never been in the Top 30."

Elbow were in London to perform at the iTunes festival at Camden's Roundhouse, where the arena-sized band seemed delighted to be playing a more intimate venue.

Frontman Guy Garvey took time between songs to tell the audience about the building’s former use (as a turning platform for trains) and even composed an impromptu song about it: "Roundhouse/Lovely spherical building/Spherical buildings/Have no naughty corners."

The band played a career spanning set with a changing line up of four string players and brass. At one point, all players left the stage except Garvey and keyboard player Craig Potter, who played a hushed version of the fragile 'Puncture Repair'.

On returning, the band and crowd sang 'Happy Birthday' to Pete Turner before playing 'Weather To Fly', during which Garvey went to hug members of the crowd. The show ended with 'One Day Like This'.

Earlier, support came from Bat For Lashes, whose performance included new track 'Laura' and former hit 'Daniel'. After the concert, fan Tom Cotton said: "It was so good, I let a little bit of wee."
