Further details have emerged over the shooting of D-12 rapper Proof, with relatives of the second victim claiming that an altercation between the two took place.

The rap star, whose real name is Deshaun Holton, was shot in the head outside the CCC club on Eight Mile Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning (April 11).

A second man, who has been identified as 35-year-old Keith Bender Jr., was also shot and remains in a critical condition at St John Hospital and Medical Centre.

Relatives of Bender believe Proof shot him and then the rapper was shot by a third person.

According to The Detroit News, police confirmed their account but provided no further details.

"Some words were exchanged. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time," said Angel Bender, his sister-in-law. "We're still putting the pieces together."

According to Angel, he was out at the club with friends to celebrate the fact he would no longer need a defibrillator for a heart condition after two years.

Previously he was a medic and a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, before he retired with heart problems.

A makeshift memorial dedicated to Proof with personal messages and stuffed animals have been laid near the scene of the shooting.

An "RIP Proof" message was also scribbled in red ink at the bottom of CCC club's sign.

Several witnesses have come forward over the shooting, but no suspects have been arrested.
