Southpaw, the film which was set to see Eminem return to the silver screen for the first time in over a decade, has been cancelled by Dreamworks.

According to MTV News, the film was due to begin shooting in 2012, but the studio have pulled the plug on the project. The reason for this has not been confirmed, but it is thought that studio executives were concerned that they already have too many films in production which have fighting or boxing as their subject matter.

The film was due to be the rapper's first since his semi autobiographical flick 8 Mile and, according to the synopsis, is about a boxer who must overcome misfortune to get back to the top. The part Eminem is due to play is described as "a fast-rising welterweight boxer who brawls his way to the title, only to see his world crash down around him due to a tragedy".

The project will now pitched to the other studios, with Training Day man Antoine Fuqua still attached as director.

Eminem returns to the UK next weekend to headline V Festival.
