Everything Everything are on course for the highest new entry in this week's Official UK Album Chart with their new album 'Arc' at number 3 in the midweek update.

The band discussed their high chart entry as they played an intimate set at London's Rough Trade East last night (January 15) to celebrate the release of the record'.

Playing to a packed shop, which also saw a queue of fans snaking down the road unable to gain entry, the Manchester band were in celebratory spirits, with singer Jonathan Higgs declaring, "This week has finally come, and we've been waiting for a long ass time". He added: “We've got Emeli Sande and Les Miserables above us which is just ridiculous. What the hell?! We've been circulating a screen shot of the statistics this morning of who sold what, and the names in the Top 10 – Rihanna, Calvin Harris... and then there's us sitting pretty at Number Three. It's pretty surreal.”

During their instore set the band worked through a short selection of tracks from 'Arc', including recent single 'Kemosabe' and 'Cough Cough'. The band also performed a string-sampling 'Duet' and closed with 'Don't Try' – both of which singer Jonathan Higgs later revealed had been earmarked as possible singles.

Speaking after the gig, Higgs explained his affection for playing instore events (the band also played at HMV earlier this week, on the day it was announced that the iconic record shop was set to go into administration), stating that "It's sort of a ritual really, it's about the symbolism. You can go to the band you like and look them in the eye and go 'I am buying your record and I like your band'. It's got a face to face, tactile nature to it that gigs don't really have."

The singer then went onto theorise about the status of indie bands within the charts, stating that: "The thing about charting is that only a certain demographic tend to be the ones that buy again and again, and it's the middle-aged men and young girls. It means that the charts always have a certain sort of flavour to them which doesn't really necessarily reflect who's actually listening or who enjoys what. It does seem like with Alt-J and Django Django, the last six months have been good for more intelligent bands, but charts are always full of the same kind of thing, regardless of what's going on. You can make a wave without selling stuff."

'Arc' is one of a number of new releases set to feature in the Official UK Album Chart this week with A$AP Rocky's 'LongLiveA$AP' album in the midweeks at Six and Villagers new album {Awayland} at Number 12. New Order's 'Lost Sirens', meanwhile, is at 14. In the singles chart Justin Timberlake's new single 'Suit & Tie' is battling against 50 Cent for the Number One slot, with the rapper marginally ahead at the moment.

Everything Everything will embark on a UK tour in support of 'Arc' next month, including an NME Awards show at London's Heaven on the 13th. The band will play:
