‘Fast & Furious 5’ tops UK box office on opening weekend

Latest in action series comfortably beats 'Rio' to Number One

Fast & Furious 5 has topped the UK box office on its opening weekend.

The latest installment in the long-running action franchise starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker pulled in a massive £5.3million and beating hit animation Rio, which nevertheless moves back up to second place.

The film was boosted by a Thursday opening and public holiday showings on Good Friday to score the third-highest opening of the year, behind Gulliver’s Travels and Paul.

Last week’s Number One, Scream 4, drops down to Number Four, while Russell Brand‘s remake of Arthur is new at Three while horror thriller Beastly enters at Five.

The Jared Leto-narrated racing documentary TT3D: Closer To The Edge is straight in at Number Nine.
