Father John Misty gives love advice in agony aunt-esque column

J. Tillman gives his views on love

Father John Misty has moonlighted as an agony aunt columnist, offering love advice to fans.

Writing for Time Out, the musician – real name J. Tillman – answered questions about relationship problems.

With one fan asking “My friend’s ex has been flirting with me. How should I handle it?”, Tillman replied, “You should create a fake Facebook page and lure them into a very public To Catch a Predator situation. Sell the rights to a major television network and become a millionaire.”

In response to the question “What’s the best way to get out of an awful first date?”, Tillman offered the advice, “Ask them for a second date within the first five minutes and refuse to drop it. Keep bringing up the second date: what you’re going to do, what time you guys should meet, what kind of apparel is appropriate… for the entire duration of the date. Then watch them run away screaming.”

In February, Tillman’s label Sub Pop was forced to apologise after it emerged that the extra bonus features added to the deluxe ‘I Love You, Honeybear’ actually caused the vinyl record to warp. The special edition of the LP came packaged in a ‘Dioramic, Meta-Musical Funtime gatefold jacket’, with various report emerging upon its release of the records being damaged.

Sub Pop addressed the issue in a blog posted to their website, saying: “In short, the extra, bulging thickness of the pop-up art in the Father John Misty jacket creates a lump that, when the LPs are sealed and packed, pushes into the LPs, causing the vinyl to warp and making that handsome, painstakingly and expensively produced jacket an elaborate record-destroying device. This oversight, and any attendant suffering, is our fault, and we are very sorry. We promise to be less ambitious in the future.”

The label added: “We are currently making 100% non-warped, coloured-vinyl LPs to replace these damaged LPs. We hope to have a delivery date for those soon, and we will update this page as soon as we have that information.”

Tillman is scheduled to play two shows at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire this October 28 and 29.
