Abe Vigoda dies, aged 94

Character actor was know for his role in 'The Godfather' and TV detective show 'Barney Miller'

Abe Vigoda, best known for his work on The Godfather has died. He was 94.

The news of Vigoda’s death was confirmed by his daughter, Carol Vigoda Fuchs. She told the Assosciated Press that he died in his sleep at her New Jersey home on Tuesday (January 26).

Vigoda took on the role of Sal Tessio in 1972 film The Godfather having spent the early part of his career in theatre, appearing both on and off Broadway. He would go on to appear in the sequel as well as other films including Look Who’s Talking.

He enjoyed critical acclaim for his role as Phil Fish in Barney Miller and received three Emmy nominations for playing the detective in 1976-1978.

Vigoda’s death comes some 34 years after People magazine in the US reported that he had passed away. The reported that “The late” Abe Vigoda had not attended the wrap party for Barney Miller, leading to years of rumours that he was dead. A website dedicated to tracking his dead or alive status was updated yesterday to mark his passing.
